Paint Protection – The facts behind the myths
We’ve all been there ……..You have just bought that shiny new car you’ve been promising yourself for ages and the salesman says “just let me introduce you to our After Sales Department”.
This is where your dealer, quite understandably, wants to maximise their profit and maybe get back some of those $$’s you managed to knock them down on the car sales price. The main products they are keen to sell you are Window Tint and Paint Protection but also items that you may have wrongly assumed were included, like mats etc.
Let’s take a look at the claims about Paint Protection
“Paint Protection will protect your vehicle’s paintwork against harmful UV fading, Acid Rain etching, bird lime, road salts, nasty wash chemicals, and, and, and”.
The short answer is NO. Whilst it will afford you some protection it is not, as we like to say, a force field around your car. Think of it like sunscreen….its just a thin layer of protection against the elements. Firstly, you have to decide what Factor you want to apply, then you need to re-apply as and when, based on what activity you’re doing. Would you be convinced if someone told you that you only need to apply once every few years and it would last, regardless of how you wash…..we would hope not.
The same is true of Paint Protection. You have various “Factors” or technologies to choose from – PTFE, Organic, Inorganic, Glass (also referred to as Ceramic or Nano Coatings). They all produce slightly different results but even the professional opinions vary as to which is better. The base product costs also vary greatly.
Probably the biggest myth is that Paint Protection is really expensive. Whilst that can be true, especially if you buy it from your dealer, it doesn’t need to be, as there are a range of products with various price points from $500 – $1500.

How does Paint Protection work
Whilst there are a huge range of product options when it comes to vehicle paint protection – PTFE, Organic, Inorganic and Glass – they all perform a very similar task, protecting your cars paintwork.
Every car has 3 layers added to the metal bodywork – Filler, Base Coat, Clear Coat. The number of layers and the thickness of those layers vary according to the manufacturer and is, as you would expect, closely aligned to the vehicle price. This makes it very interesting when you consider that Paint Protection is often considered more worthwhile on expensive cars when in actual fact the opposite could be true as the less expensive cars have a reduced level of protection against the elements.
Paint Protection works by adding a coating on top of your cars Clear Coat giving an additional level of protection. The mistake some owners make is believing that this layer repels everything that lands on the car. Some of this is due to the over hyping of Paint Protection by car dealer After Sale Departments in an attempt to justify the huge prices charged. Paint Protection will:
a. Add an additional layer of protection against contaminants, giving you more time to remove them before they cause damage.
b. Make your car easier to keep clean as the contaminants are sitting on the surface.
c. Improve the shine of your vehicle
d. Provide greater protection from UV rays
There is one proviso with the above and that is you need to ensure that the product is applied properly. Seems obvious but in many cases the application is done off site by untrained applicators under pressure to get the car finished. With a mobile professional detailer the whole process is visible to you. They are also not confined to one product and can therefore apply a product that fits with your budget.
About Car Care Australia
Car Care started in Perth in 1987 and has grown into Australia’s largest mobile car detailer. Even from those early days we set out to be different and were the first company to carry our own power and water so that we could work anywhere. In many ways our service hasn’t changed that much although the range of car care products we carry have grown significantly over time. Back in those early days there was no such thing as Paint Protection or Micro Fibre Cloths.
In 1990 we saw franchising as a way to expand our network that now covers every State and Territory in Australia as it not only created opportunities for over 300 men and women to run their own business it also ensured the level of service that we wanted to offer with customer focused detailers. We even expanded to New Zealand.
That attention to detail along with national coverage has enabled us to provide our car detailing services to most (if not all) of the major vehicle manufacturers over that time. It has also enabled us to work on some very different and challenging events. This included maintaining a fleet of Audi’s as they and the accompanying journalists travelled across the Nullabor. We have attended most sporting events from AFL to Cricket to the Australian Open, Formula 1 Grand Prix, etc. and more recently in 2019 looking after all the vehicles (including the Royal one) at the Invictus Games in Sydney.
The most significant changes we have seen have been in technology. When we started out there was no such thing as mobile phones so our detailers used a telephone box to call the office for their next job. Through a cloud based job allocation system developed by our parent company Mpower Franchising Pty Ltd our detailers can now access enquiries through an App on their phone enabling them to respond to a client promptly.
We will continue to innovate and expand our coverage and range of services in the car appearance market through delivering a mobile service in a client focused way whilst maintaining the opportunities for those wishing to run their own business.
